Metadata architecture for durable journal discoverability

Discoverability is built from reliable source records, persistent identifiers, structured article pages and metadata that can travel across scholarly services.

Discovery begins when the record is created

Titles, contributor names, affiliations, abstracts, dates, references, funding information and rights should be captured as structured fields at publication time. Reconstructing them later from PDF files produces omissions and conflicting versions. A reliable source record lets the journal correct information once and reuse it consistently in every public and machine-readable channel.

Identifiers connect the publication ecosystem

DOIs, ORCID identifiers, ISSNs and stable article URLs perform different roles but must refer to the same scholarly object. Validation should prevent malformed values and preserve the relationship between an article, its journal, its authors and its versions. Persistent identifiers are most useful when the landing page remains accessible and presents the metadata a reader or indexing service expects.

The HTML article page is the primary public record

A clear title, authorship, abstract, publication dates, citation information and accessible full text should be present in the page itself. Canonical URLs prevent duplicate paths from competing, while language alternatives describe equivalent translations. Structured data can reinforce these facts, but it cannot repair missing or contradictory visible information. The human-readable page and machine-readable metadata must tell the same story.

One record should serve many channels

The same controlled article record can generate citation metadata, DOI deposits, OAI-PMH responses, DOAJ XML, RIS, BibTeX, sitemaps and social previews. Central generation reduces manual copying and exposes inconsistencies before external services receive them. Each export still needs format-specific validation, character encoding checks and a clear policy for updates or withdrawals.

Quality assurance must be continuous

Metadata quality is not a one-time launch task. Journals should monitor broken links, missing identifiers, invalid dates, incomplete language variants and differences between public pages and deposited records. Change history makes corrections traceable. As the archive grows, disciplined validation and stable URL design give search engines, libraries and citation systems dependable paths through the complete scholarly collection.
